Thursday's North West 200 racing as it happened (2023)

Racing got under way on Thursday evening as the North West 200 clicked nto top gear.

We had opening practice on Tuesday with a second qualifying session earlier today.

Now the riders had the chance to showcase their skills with three octane-fuelled races scheduled for fans to enjoy.

It all kicked off with the Strain Engineering Supersport, run over six laps and featuring record North West 200 race winner Alastair Seeley.

The Carrick man would have another opportunity to add to his 27 race wins when he also competed in the Briggs Equipment Superstock race.

And Thursday night's action was due to be completed with the Milltown Service Station Supertwins over four laps, which features legendary rider Jeremy McWilliams.

Thursday's schedule

  • Practice: Roads closed 9.15am to 3.15pm
  • Race One: Strain Engineering Supersport (6 laps) 5.45pm
  • Race Two: Briggs Equipment Superstock (6 laps) 6.30pm
  • Race Three: Milltown Service Station Supertwin (4 laps) 7.15pm

We will bring you live race updates from Thursday's action, so stick with us...

Key Events

Meanwhile, the final race of the evening has been cancelled.

Nothing has been confirmed yet but it may be slotted into Saturday's schedule if there is time.

Disappointing end to the night.

As you were

Seeley obviously got the win, with Davey Todd second and Michael Dunlop third.

Confusion over the Superstock final standings

Some confusion over who finished second and third in that race, due to the red flag and where the classification goes back to.

We will update ASAP.

Neill delighted with Seeley's latest win

Synetiq BMV team boss Philip Neill said:

"Very satisfying. Alastair has still got it. He was very confident on the bike as soon as he first got it. We did sa little bit of testing before this and he was comfortable on the bike.

"We might have to sit down and see how many wins he has got with our team. It is very pleasing and satisfying.

"It is all for my father (Hector Neill). He is the road racing one and it is nice to give him what he loves. He lives for this and the TT.

"He still enjoys being here, and it is nice for Alastair to get him a win."

Gareth Fullerton

Seeley heading for win #28

He has a commanding lead after five laps.

The battle seems to be for the minor positions with Todd now in front of Dunlop by 0.3 seconds.

Gareth Fullerton

End of lap 4

Seeley is in cruise mode, even though he is fairly ripping things up in this race.

Another consistent lap from the Wee Wizard who leads Dunlop by 8.2 seconds.

Todd is third, right behind Dunlop.

Gareth Fullerton

Todd catching Dunlop

There is a good battle on for the other podium positions with Dunlop just ahead of Todd at Metropole.

Todd has closed the gap.

Gareth Fullerton

Some lap time

Seeley lapped the Triangle in 4:19:525 which is just about a second off Superbike times.

And this is a Superstock.

Gareth Fullerton

End of lap 3

Seeley now holds a 5-second lead from Dunlop, with Todd almost two seconds further behind in third.

There is another seven-second gap to Harrison.

Gareth Fullerton

Mistake from Todd

He runs straight on at Mathers chicance and has to take a stop penalty.

That has allowed Seeley to race well clear.

Dunlop is now into second.

Gareth Fullerton

Seeley takes lap record

Seeley posts a new lap record of 4:20:009.

Todd previously held it from last year.

Gareth Fullerton

Seeley and Todd dicing for the lead

Seeley still in front at the end of lap 2.

He leads Todd by 0.880 seconds, with Dunlop two seconds back in third.

Could NW200 win number 28 be on the cards for Seeley?

Gareth Fullerton

Next up

It's Dean Harrison, James Hillier and Conor Cummins.

Gareth Fullerton

End of lap 1

Seeley really pressing ahead.

He leads Todd by over half a second, with Dunlop a further 1.2 seconds back in third.

Second race is under way!

FHO Team is out - as are Brookes and Hickman

The FHO Racing Team and riders Josh Brookes and Peter Hickman have withdrawn from the North West 200 after what has been perceived to be a technical infringement with the use of carbon fibre wheels.

It appears the wheels are part of the homologated set-up of the bike.

Former NW200 winner Phillip McCallen told the BBC:

"It is massive disappointment. They are two top riders. Hickman was here to win and Brookes wanted on the rostrum as well. To lose them and their team is a very sad thing to happen.

"I don't really know what has happened."

He added:

"Maybe it could have been mentioned earlier. I am against rules being broken, but I think a little bit more looking into it would have worked. It is sad we have lost the team and those two riders."

Sighting lap under way

Not long until the start of the Superstocks.

Some breaking news.

Josh Brookes won't be riding in the Superstocks due to carbon fibre wheels on his bike, which apparently break the rules.

Brookes claims his team only discovered the illegality after qualifying, and his FHO team did not have time to find alternative wheels.

Bizarre situation but Brookes is out.

BBC also reporting this will impact on Brookes' teammate Peter Hickman who also races for the FHO Racing Team.

Gareth Fullerton

Up next

It's the Briggs Equipment Superstock race over 6 laps.

Gareth Fullerton

Seeley: 'We will learn from this race'

Alastair Seeley says the team will learn from that opening Supersport race ahead of Saturday's second running of the class.

He said:

"It wasn't for the lack of trying. It was a close race and we had a few out of the seat jobs.

"I got the lead on the last lap and tried to break, but the 600s are difficult to break away. The last lap was a bit frantic. I had a moment at University and then me and Michael ran each other deep at Metropole.

"It was mad into Black Hill, and I got the run on Richard Cooper heading into Juniper but wasn't close enough to Davey.

"But we got six good laps and we can make it better for Saturday."

Gareth Fullerton

Todd: "This win means a lot"

Davey Todd finished second four times last year.

Now he has a victory at the North West 200.

He said:

"Honestly, I was so worried. I wasn't riding right on Tuesday and the boys have worked flat out, changing the motor on the bike.

"They have worked so hard yesterday and today. They didn't eat yesterday. That means so much after all those seconds last year. I didn't want it to slip away.

(Video) NW200 Thursday evening race 2 - super stock - 11 May 2023

"It was who was strongest on the brakes, and trying to get up the inside of them isn't easy. I am over the moon. That is a dream. That's nice.

"Yiou can't have a strategy in races like that. Yoiu don't know what's going to happen from corner to corner.

"I am not sure how I came out on top, but I gave that my all. I wanted that top step for me and all the boys.

"This means a lot. I have won here in the wet but I want to be a rider who can win all weather."

Davey Todd wins it from Alastair Seeley.

Just 0.108 seconds separated them at the end.

That's a second North West 200 win for the Englishman, and after four runners-up finishes last year.

Cooper held on for third.

Gareth Fullerton

Todd has some space

He has eased clear heading up to Juniper.

Seeley is second with Cooper third.

Gareth Fullerton

At Metropole for the final time

Todd leads from Seeley who runs wide and hampers Dunlop.

Cooper squeezes into second.

Gareth Fullerton

At University

All change.

Todd leads Cooper and Seeley, with Dunlop and Harrison tucked in behind.

Gareth Fullerton

End of lap 5

Seeley now leads the race from Cooper, Todd, Dunlop and Harrison.

We are onto the final lap!

Gareth Fullerton

At Metropole

Cooper leads from Seeley, Dunlop and Todd.

Seeley slipped down the inside of Dunlop to take second there.

Lovely move.
